Evolution

Evolution did not get to start with a clean workbench. By the time it found anything useful, the materials were already alive and needed to stay that way during renovations. It has been making adjustments under those conditions ever since and feels the results deserve a little context.

Its methods can look unconventional. Something built for one purpose becomes useful for another. A promising feature stays; an expensive flourish disappears. The Gene Pool keeps arriving with new possibilities, while Time supplies the only deadline Evolution respects: however long it takes. Neither has ever provided a finished specification.

Humans are especially demanding customers. They admire an eagle, then point at their own knees and ask to speak to the designer. Evolution acknowledges the feedback without accepting the job title. There was never a grand blueprint, and “still here” remains a respectable performance review. It does have a stubborn affection for living things that find a way through. A changed habitat, an awkward body, an unlikely opportunity: give it enough generations and something interesting may happen. Just stop standing over the workbench asking if it is done.
